2012: I am delighted to inform you that this year a record 5 members of the pathology department, Drs Aliya Husain, Anthony Montag, Ting-Wa Wong, Steve Meredith and Husain Sattar, have been voted favorite faculty by the graduating Pritzker class. Since the students usually select about  20 faculty members as “favorite” for inclusion in the class picture, this year 25% of the favorite faculty are from Pathology. This is a remarkable achievement since Pathology faculty comprise only about 6% of the total faculty members. This speaks volumes about the quality of medical education provided by the Pathology department in general and these individuals in particular. Please join me in congratulating each one of them.

Our residents bagged all three prizes  First, second, and third in the 2012 Chicago Pathology resident research competition.
A former Pritzker graduate, Dr. Jane CK Chan (MD ’82), has recently endowed a scholarship in perpetuity to the University of Chicago in honor of Dr. Ting-Wa Wong. This scholarship goes to support straight MD students who have exhibited academic excellence and at the same time are in need of financial aid.  The scholarship will be awarded yearly to a sophomore student who has performed exceptionally in CPPT, the course in which Dr. Wong continues to have a heavy commitment.  The award will be used to support the recipient’s remaining two years of medical studies; i.e., the junior and senior years.

Dr Kamran Mirza presented “C4d immunoreactivity and Cardiac Allograft Vasculopathy Leading to Death in Pediatric Heart Transplant Recipients“ at the fall 2011meeting and won The Society for Pediatric Pathology’s Gordon F. Vawter Pathologist-in-Training Award

Donald N. Pritzker Professor and Chairman, Department of Pathology, Biological Sciences Division and The Pritzker Medical School
Pathology is an exciting discipline in that it transcends the traditional boundaries between basic and clinical sciences. With advances in molecular biology, the completion of the human genome project, and development of sophisticated technology such as expression profiling, and proteomics, we are poised to understand the pathogenesis of human diseases at the molecular level.

The Department of Pathology at the University of Chicago is committed to participate in the excitement of discoveries that lie ahead of us. Our faculty and our programs are driven by scholarship in the broadest sense - from scholarly diagnosis to cutting edge laboratory research. We are also deeply committed to excellence in education. Our faculty actively participate in teaching medical students, graduate students and in training residents. In the past several years the department has embarked on an ambitious program of building facilities and faculty. Approximately 4,000 square feet of space has been renovated to house surgical pathology and the Human Tissue Resource Center. The Center houses a tissue procurement and storage facility that is equipped with a state-of-the-art laboratory for molecular analysis of human tissues. On the Clinical Pathology side, expansion and renovations have occurred in Hematopathology, Molecular Diagnosis and HLA Laboratory. In addition virtually all the research laboratories have been upgraded. Approximately 35 new faculty members have joined the department in the past 10 years, including a Hughes Investigator and a member of the National Academy of Sciences. On a per capita basis the department is among the top 5 with respect to NIH grants. All sections of the Department -- basic, clinical and translational -- have participated in the growth. The addition of new facilities and new faculty has greatly enhanced our educational efforts, particularly our Residency Training Program and Pathology Graduate Program.

I urge you to visit our website often to learn more about our department and its programs through this website as we are constantly growing and updating.
