Gastrointestinal & Hepatic Pathology The University of Chicago Department of Pathology offers a one- or two-year fellowship that combines diagnostic gastrointestinal and hepatic pathology training with opportunities for clinical or basic research. The GI service includes the full range of adult and pediatric gastrointestinal diseases (approximately 6,000 cases annually), with special emphasis on inflammatory bowel diseases. The University of Chicago is also a major center for pediatric and adult liver transplantation and serves as a referral center for the diagnosis and treatment of the full spectrum of hepatic diseases (approximately 1,000 cases annually). The fellow participates in the sign-out of surgical and biopsy material and consultation cases. The fellow also presents pathology findings at several departmental and multidisciplinary conferences. Research opportunities are available within the Pathology department and in collaboration with Gastroenterology, GI surgery, and Transplant surgery investigators among others. Major ongoing basic research programs involve pathogenesis of inflammatory bowel disease, colonic and hepatic carcinogenesis, and molecular regulation of ion transport, actomyosin structure, and tight junction permeability in intestinal epithelium. The optional second year of training may be devoted entirely to laboratory investigation. |
